Registrars
often put locks on domains as an additional layer of security to prevent unauthorized transfers away
from their systems. Often this feature is enabled by default. Depending on
your registrar, this service could be called any number of things including
Domain Lock or Locking, Domain Protect, Registrar Lock, Transfer Lock, Transfer
Security or High Security. Enabling or Disabling the lock is typically as simple
as clicking a link, button, or unchecking box within your domain account. Listed
in alphabetical order below are directions from various registrar's sites on
how to remove the lock on your domain so it can be transferred. A whois
search on
your domain will reveal the name of your existing registrar (see line that
says
"Registrar"). If you don't see your registrar listed on this page
or need additional assistance, please contact
us and we'd be happy to help you if you are tranferring your domain name
to our registry.

RegistrarPDQ - eNom's popular Private Label Reseller System
RegistrarPDQ is eNom's private label domain name registration system. It is used
by some ICANN accredited registrars and many eNom resellers including CheapDomains.com,
Domain-Registry.com, Sharp Register.com, Global Internet (GI.net) and NameEye.com. Like the Wild West Domains reseller
system, all sites using RegistrarPDQ have a similar "look" for navigation with the only differences visible in the logo and color scheme (See Sipence.com,
an ICANN accredited registrar, as an example site showing the look).
Think your domain uses the services of an eNom reseller? Check your domain's whois record and see if eNom is listed as the registrar. If so, use eNom's "Reseller Information Retrieval Tool" at http://www.enom.com/help/ to determine if eNom or one of their resellers is servicing your account. The reseller retrieval tool will reveal the reseller site's main address on where you can find a link to the login page.
To unlock your domain, you must login to your reseller's specific RegistrarPDQ site, however once logged in you can follow the directions for Sipence (steps 2-5) on unlocking your domain.

Wild West Domains Resellers
The Wild West Domains (WWD) registration api is similar to DomainZoo and GoDaddy,
except for step 1 login to your current domain reseller's account management
area.
The registration system typically has https://www.securepaynet.net as the base url for logging in, managing your domain or purchasing products and the site usually advertises this phone number for support: (480) 624-2500. All the WWD reseller sites have the same basic look with the exception of colors being changed for navigation and a set of slightly different but distinct looking logos and marketing materials. See DomainZoo's site as an example of what typical WWD reseller site looks like. DomainZoo is not a WWD reseller but rather an ICANN accredited registrar that uses the WWD/GoDaddy style registration system. A whois search on your domain might reveal the phrase "Registered through:" and then a web address which will help you to figure out your existing WWD reseller's web address.

You can also unlock your domain from the "Advanced DNS" page. Visit your Domain Control Panel and click the "Manage Advanced DNS Settings" link. If your domain is locked, you will find an "Unlock Domain" button near the bottom of the page, in the "Name Servers" section. Click this button to unlock your domain.

Once your domain is unlocked with your registrar, you must do a bit of waiting before you should start a domain transfer request. One day wait is a good approach otherwise you might have to submit your transfer request twice if it fails initially because your domain is still locked. This is especially important for the older top level domains (TLDs) like Dot-COM and Dot-NET which do not have a real-time public whois service.
There is currently no centralized, real-time Whois system in the .com and .net TLDs. The zone files in the registries for older domain extensions like these are updated only twice daily so please wait a minimum of 24 hours before expecting to see the status of your domain name change in the registry's whois database. However, it is not unusual for these domains to update in as much as 72 hours. Verisign which is the official .COM and .NET registry operator is currently experimenting with rapid zone updates and has promised near real-time updates by the end of first quarter 2006. Initially, within 12-18 hours or so, you should be able to see your domain unlocked in your current registrar's whois service but it must be listed in the registry's database without the lock to become effective across the Internet.
The newer TLD registries are much closer to real-time. As a result newer top level domains like .BIZ and .INFO update in considerably less time. Usually, your changes submitted for the root zone files of a .ORG, .BIZ, .INFO, and .US domains are updated every 5 to 15 minutes therefore the waiting period to transfer after unlocking these domains is typically significantly shorter. You should see your changes at the appropriate registry level within an hour or two.
For all the domains, please verify that your domain is listed as unlocked in the registry whois database prior to submitting your transfer request to minimize the amount time required to complete the transfer request.
